I like knowing how or why something works. Not really a "set your camera to this to get this look" without an explanation. That being said the BEST books I have read and will be keeping forever for reference are the following links on Amazon. You could easily get these books at Barnes & Noble or Border's as well.

Lighting and Exposure
http://www.amazon.com/Exposure-Lighting-Digital-Photographers-Only/dp/0470038691/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241575888&sr=8-1

Composition
http://www.amazon.com/Photographers-Eye-Composition-Design-Digital/dp/0240809343/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1241575923&sr=1-1

Portraiture photography I got it mainly for the Photoshop Retouching information. I LOVE PP glamour and portraits.

Funny, I just looked and found this one in my closet. I forgot I had it. Smile
CS3 Photoshop
